Blacksmith

Exquisite quarter-plate English occupational ambrotype of a blacksmith and/or farrier.  While we have offered other images in the “smithing” trade, the farrier is not often seen. While most blacksmiths weren’t farriers we feel that this happy go lucky gentleman might have practiced in both occupations. This brilliant portrait shows him holding the horseshoe that was freshly forged and a drawing knife in his other hand which would be used to trim the horse’s foot. He is very professional in his appearance: his hair and a beard are perfectly groomed and he wears a killer black polka-dot vest with a white shirt and tie.  His work apron is visible below his waist and glistens beautifully in the light.   The British were known for their expertise in the collodion process and this English photographer was surely one of the best as the tonal quality and contrast are perfection. This plate just sings!  It is housed in a full leather case and you will be hard pressed to find a better overall example. Please note this is also identified as Mr. Summerfield, (William), of the Old Inn, Bishop's Hull, England. Included is period envelope addressed to Mr. Summerfield. Also there is some over paint on the sleeves as seen that we failed to mention as it is not obvious when first viewing. $500
